Overview

This course addresses one of the most essential characteristics of a leader, Ethics.  A leader who is not ethical, particularly in the law enforcement profession cannot effectively lead other ethical law enforcement professionals.  In this module Dr. Trautman will identify the main causes of unethical behavior in law enforcement organizations and how it can be effectively com-batted.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course student should be able to:

  • Identify the 3 C’s of Ethical Leadership.
  • Identify the most frequent ways that law enforcement professionals lose their careers.
  • Understand why an agency’s Mission Statement is so important in establishing leadership and ethics throughout the organization.

Instructor: Dr. Neal Trautman is the Director of the non-profit, Congressional award-winning, National Institute of Ethics. He also instructs anti-corruption seminars to foreign governments for the United States Department of State. His PH.D is from St. John’s University in Administration of Criminal Justice. Following a highly decorated 16 -year law enforcement career, Neal ended his municipal career as the Director of Human Resources for the City of Winter Parks, Florida. He has authored 12 published books, chaired 5 national ethics committees, conducted 4 nationwide anti-corruption research studies, was founding President of the International Association of Ethics Trainers, has instructed over 800 leadership seminars, authored 60 articles and presented 99 conference speeches. Neal was bestowed the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers’ Service to Society Award in 1999. In 1997 Neal walked alone from Florida to Washington DC to start a national movement to enhance integrity in America.
