Introduction by Chief David Perry

Overview

This course focuses on cultural sensitivity and its importance to leadership, particularly in the law enforcement community.  As law enforcement professionals we are obligated to provide responsive, effective, and equal services to all of the diverse cultural groups that we serve.  This module provides insight into the barriers that often hinder us as individuals and organizations in providing these services in the manner intended.  It stresses the need to understand the view points of the cultures we serve and to take a journey of self-discovery regarding our bias, prejudice and perception of these cultures.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  • Discuss the importance of understanding the concepts of diversity.
  • Discuss the dimensions of culture and the impact they can have on personal interactions.
  • Discuss the impact of stereotyping, biases, prejudice, and discrimination.

Instructor: Florida State University’s Chief of Police, David L. Perry, has worked in law enforcement since 1993.  He began his career as a police officer for the Albany Police Department in Albany, Georgia where he quickly rose to the rank of investigator then transferred to the Albany Dougherty Drug Unit. At age 26, he was appointed Chief of Police at Albany State University in Albany, Georgia. From 2003 to 2006 Perry served as the Deputy Chief of Police for Clemson University. In 2006, David accepted the position as Chief of Police for Florida State University (FSU).  As FSU’s Chief of Police, his responsibilities include overseeing safety, police and security services on campuses in Panama City Florida, Sarasota Florida and the Florida State University School (K-12) in addition to his main campus responsibilities. The FSU Police Department currently has 67 sworn officers and a number of security and administrative personnel at each location. In 2014 Perry was promoted to Assistant Vice President for Safety and Chief of Police for Florida State University. His additional responsibilities include overseeing access control and CCTV systems, transportation-parking enforcement and emergency management. Chief Perry shares his extensive knowledge of the campus law enforcement profession while teaching as an adjutant professor with FSU’s College of Criminology and as a Certified Instructor for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Leadership Academy.   He has provided instruction related to criminal justice to hundreds of students in a traditional instruction setting and online, as well as presenting in-service training courses to campus, city, and county law enforcement agencies.  David is a graduate of Albany State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice (1993).  He holds a Masters in Public Administration from Albany State University (2002) and is currently enrolled in the PhD program for Educational Leadership at Florida State University. He has also completed the basic police recruit training academies in Georgia, South Carolina and Florida.
