Overview

This course discusses Legacy Leadership, the concepts behind it, why it’s important, and the things we have to do to make sure we have a strong legacy mindset.  Doing this promotes our organization and protects our future.  Students will be reminded of the fact that all leaders leave a legacy.  What do we want our legacy to be?  In law enforcement we must always remember to pursue excellence and inspire others to do so as well.

Instructor:  Chief (Retired) Gary Blankenship has served as a law enforcement officer for more than 32 years. In 1980, he joined the U.S. Army Military Police Corps and served in various capacities until 1984 when he began his civilian law enforcement career with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina. In the first 5 years, he worked as a patrol deputy and for ten years as a criminal investigator. During his tenure as a detective, one of his most proud moments was when he was able to solve an extremely complex and high profile rape of a 12 year old girl kidnapped by a stranger at her bus stop. The investigation led to an offender who had just been released from prison for similar crimes. The defendant is currently serving life in prison. Chief Blankenship moved on to the Carrboro Police Department in 1999 and returned to Chatham County as the Chief Deputy in 2002. Chief Blankenship was instrumental in bringing comprehensive weekly leadership training to his agency and they currently have online leadership requirements through the International Academy of Public Safety and monthly requirements with their own programs presented by fellow employees. Chief Blankenship received his BS Degree in Criminal Justice from Mount Olive College and graduated from the North Carolina Justice Academy’s Management Development Program. He has been a law enforcement instructor for 17 years. He is married and has two wonderful children.
