Introduction by Charles D. Walston

Overview

In this course we take a deeper look into Emotional Intelligence based on the book, “Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than I.Q.”, by Daniel Goleman.  The instructor summarizes the concepts discussed in the book and provides explanations on why practicing Emotional Intelligence is critical as a public safety and leadership skill.

Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:

  • Describe Salovey’s 5 Elements of Emotional Intelligence.
  • Distinguish Rational Reactions from Emotional Reactions.
  • Understand the strategy of providing feedback and how it relates to Emotional Intelligence.

Instructor: Charles D. Walston currently serves as the Training Director for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice, Office of Staff Development and Training.  He spent the first 11 years of his career working at Eastern Correctional Institution in Maury, NC, which housed 540 adult male, close custody inmates.  Being initially hired in 1983 as a Food Service Officer, his career allowed him to advance thru the ranks of Correctional Officer, Lead Correctional Officer, Correctional Sergeant, Correctional Assistant Unit Manager, and Correctional Lieutenant.  In 1987, he obtained his General Instructor Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and he began assisting the Office of Staff Development and Training as an adjunct instructor in Basic and Instructor level training.  In 1994, he obtained a full time position as a Correctional Training Instructor II and he has remained in the training section for the past 21 years, serving as Eastern Region Training Manager, Deputy Director for Training and Training Director.  He also spent 25 years in the US Army Reserves, where he retired in 2010 as a Military Police First Sergeant, where he led a team of MP’s who specialized in post-mobilization training for deploying forces.  His service includes over 5 years of active duty, resulting from various mobilizations and overseas deployments including the Gulf War (1990-1991), Iraqi Freedom (2003-2004), and Iraq and Afghanistan Contingency Operations (2006-2007).  Director Walston is also a life-long learner, attending classes as a working adult, acquiring an Associate Degree in Military Science (1992), a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice (1999) and a Master of Arts degree in Business and Organizational Security Management (2007).  In 2014, he was appointed by Governor Pat McCrory to serve as a member of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
